Programme
Kalra Hospital and SRCNC is one of the premiere institutions in India,
dedicated to fighting the single largest cause of deaths in the country -
the heart disease, also dubbed as the epidemic of the twentieth century. The
incidence of the disease in India is as high, as in the west, with
approximately 14 million people affected by cardiac disease.
One third of all deaths in the community are caused by heart attack, and
equal number who suffer from non-fatal infarctions require treatment in
hospital. Having taken cognisance of the prevailing cardiac injustice in the
country, we, at Kalra Hospital & SRCNC launched the community outreach
programme as a socially responsible person towards society, with the aim to
redress the imbalance by providing cardiac care to the deprived, by taking
it to individual's doorstep.
The inception of the idea has been derived from the experience of Dr. R.N.
Kalra, medical director of the institute, who during his long tenure of
service as an imminent cardiologist, came across unbelievable size of people
who were suffering from cardiac problems, but did not have access to
specialized heart care facility. Further, an informal address to the public
on heart disease and its preventive aspects generated immense interest among
the public and also caught the attention of the media. This incident
triggered off the idea of having a full-fledged community outreach
programme, which would take heart care to the people and thereby break the
patient hospital barrier.
The community outreach programme, which was started with a vision to reach
out to the health needs of those in the remotest corner of the country, has
already covered various pockets across the country. The scope of the
programme has increased substantially since its inception.
